At first glance, Dragon’s Breath is just another removal ability in the long list that Mages already have available to them, but upon closer inspection, it’s actually the ultimate ability that they’ve all been waiting on (the Fire-spec'd ones, anyway). For starters, you’re not restricted to hitting a single target: you have the option of doing all three damage to a single target to get it out of the way, or of clearing a swath through an opposing army of Apprentice Teeps. Whenever you draw Dragon’s Breath, you’re not getting a card that gives you a single option, as is the case with most removal abilities—you’re getting an option for just about any situation.
As with most removal abilities that get lots of attention, the real selling point for this card's utility in your deck isn’t simply its flexible damage dealing, but the other text that comes with it. Frost Nova is great for dealing a single point of damage to your opponent’s characters and taking down monsters like Leeroy Jenkins, but the real strength lies in the fact that it also keeps any survivors from attacking. Dragon’s Breath works a little differently, but once you take it for a spin you’ll see that it’s even more devastating.
It takes a moment to realize just what removing game text from a card is capable of, but once you start to think about it, you’ll see just how funky things can get. To get you mad scientists thinking about what you can do with this, let’s look at three of the coolest uses I came across when I was working on the set:
